What Is Vaasthu Shastra?

Explanation : Om I bow to the holy Vastupurusha of great strength and valour whose body rests under all dwellings, son of Brahma, Upholder of the entire Universe whose head is placed to carry the burden of the earth, who makes all sites (receptacle of) his presence,the towns and cities, temples(and palaces), houses, tanks and wells, who assures all kinds of fulfillment, of gracious appearance,support of cosmos,supreme purusa,granter of boons to Indra, Lord of dwellings, obeisance” 'Puranikavastusantiprayoga' fol.25.

Vaastu is an ancient Indian science of architecture and buildings which helps in making a congenial setting or a place to live and work in a most scientific way taking advantage of the benefits bestowed by nature, its elements and energy fields for enhanced wealth, health, prosperity and happiness.
Records and scriptures are full of testimonials from kings, commoners, artists, saints and traders on how Vaasthu helped them reap great benefits.

Science of Vaastu

It is rational : Vaastu is the study of impact of the Sun's rays on the earth. Vaastu reads the characteristics of a house and explains its effects on the residents in a scientific manner, we can surely count it among the other sciences.

It is permanent : The principles of vaastu is based on directions which are permanent. Likewise the effects of vaastu are also permanent.

It is beneficial : The basic purpose of vaastu is to make the lives of people happier and problem free.

It is universal : Since vaastu is based on the properties of the earth and the sun, it is surely universal. Nationality, religion, caste etc. have nothing to do with the science of vaastu, it is equal for one and all.

It is practicable : It is very simple to follow. Build your house according to the guidelines provided by vaastu and lead a healthy and happy life.

Since it possesses all the features mentioned above and is based on action, cause and effect it can most defiantly be concluded that it is a science.
Be it a home or office, factory or a commercial block, Vaasthu shastra is known to reward the follower the benefits and protection from ill effect in life-be it economic, emotional or spiritual.

Like any other science, Vaasthu is considered rational (based on cause and effect) practical, normative (codified and governed by principle), utilitarian and universal.

We live in, and are surrounded by, various types of energy fields which operate freely in open space. When we place a structure here, the equilibrium is affected. Vaasthu helps in designed the structure to ensure that a harmonious flow of energy is present in the building and equilibrium maintained. Some of these invisible energies have also been proved by the use of Pyramid model.

Vaasthu considered the interplay of various forces of nature involving the five elements of earth, water, wind, fire and ether and strives to maintain equilibrium as these elements influence, guide and change the living styles of not only human beings but every living being on earth. Thus they influence our deeds, luck, behavior and other basics of life.

According to Vaastu, there are 5 basic elements in the whole world. They are the Earth, Water, Air, Fire Heat & Light and Sky Cosmic. Vaastu is a science of balancing these elements in the proper proportions for prosperity and harmony.

In a broader sense vaastu is a science of directions and it accounts for 8 directions; North, South, East, West, North-East, North-West, South-East and South-West.
